Suka-Marie Back (Sookie)
April 4, 2010 to November 15, 2024
Suka or Sookie as she was affectionately known, was born on or about April 4, 2010. Sookie was born in northwestern Ontario and had a difficult first year of life. Found pregnant and wondering alone at approximately one year old, she had no identified family. Taken under the wing of a passing truck driver, she was given a temporary home, where soon after, she surprisingly gave birth to two puppies. While she was loved and cared for by this family, unexpected allergies meant she needed to find a new home. Sookie found her forever home with our family in St. Vital in 2011. Graduating with Honours in 2012 from the Winnipeg Humane Society Obedience Academy, Sookie pursued a lifelong career as a greeter, therapist, security house watcher, and a nanny helping to raise her three human babies. In her spare time, Sookie was a naturalist who regularly enjoyed exploring the world around her indulging in a sensory experience. She had a particular interest in rabbit ecology and enjoyed regular walks, camping, fishing, boat rides, family vacations with the car, and generally going anywhere her human companions would take her. She especially loved long sniffs in the park behind her home, stealing food from the table, and investigating school backpacks for neglected lunches.
Sookie was a keen patron of amateur sports spending many hours cheering on her packmates at field-side whether it was baseball, football or soccer. Her beautiful big brown eyes, golden fur, and sweet disposition meant Sookie made many friends and acquaintances over the years. She particularly enjoyed regularly meeting her canine friends at the park and playing with neighbourhood children. Sookie was the strong silent type, a natural listener who would light up a room wherever she went. Sadly, after a brief illness, our sweet Suka-Marie died surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.
While she may not be at our knee to scratch, we know she is within our call and will always provide comfort and love to those who loved and provided her comfort in return. We endeavor to live everyday as the person she believed us all to be. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an animal shelter of your choice.
