Euthanasia

Saying goodbye to our dogs and cats is saying goodbye to one of our family members. At Sunset Veterinary Care we understand the seriousness of this decision and respect this as a time for families to be together. We provide an in-home visit in order to decrease the stress and anxiety many pets feel. This style of visit allows for private expression of grief, memorial and ceremony. Every pet will receive sedation prior to euthanasia to further reduce any stress or anxiety. All aspects of this visit will keep the family together. Aftercare of the pet can be arranged personally or through Sunset Veterinary Care. Visits will be scheduled for up to 120 minutes.

Aftercare

Sunset Veterinary Care works closely with two local, family run pet crematoriums - Peaceful Pasture Pet Cremation and Precious Pet Cremation.

Aquamation (Water-Based Cremation) - We offer this service through Peaceful Pasture Pet Cremation. Aquamation is an environmentally friendly option for our companions. A biodegradable urn is included in the aquamation fee. Pets are privately water-cremated so the remains of your beloved are returned to you. Aquamation remains appear nearly identical to the ashes from traditional cremation.

Private Cremation – A single animal will be cremated at a time to ensure cremains (ashes) of only your loved one are returned to you. There is a large selection of urns available. Cremains can be picked up at Precious Pet Cremation or your family veterinary clinic. Delivery is available for an additional fee.

Communal Cremation – More than one animal will be cremated together. All communal cremains are laid to rest at Precious Pet’s peaceful acreage or the meadow at Peaceful Pasture.

Other – Please discuss other options with Sunset Veterinary Care prior to your visit to ensure your wishes can be met. We can make arrangements (based on need) for body donation to RRC Polytechnic’s Veterinary Technologist program.

Please check with local laws regarding burial and always do so in a fashion that protects our wildlife and waterways.

Quality-of-Life Assessment

Making a decision on the well-being of your furry family member can be extremely overwhelming. This is not a task that any individual or family should feel alone in completing. During this in-home visit we will complete a physical examination, work through a quality-of-life scale together and have a joint discussion. (Virtual visits will have a video physical-assessment in lieu of a check-up). We will cover what to expect during a euthanasia appointment, how to tell if your pet is suffering, and we will always make time for family concerns and questions. If time allows, euthanasia may be performed at this visit, if considered appropriate. If time does not, an appointment can be scheduled at another day or time. Assessment will be scheduled for up to 60 minutes.

Please note that a Quality-of-Life Assessment is not required before scheduling an In-Home Euthanasia appointment.

We retain the right to decline services to any person who appears to be below the age of 18 without identification, is under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, or is verbally and/or physically threatening or abusive.
